　　【明報專訊】讀者 Cathleen來電郵問， terrible和 terrifying有何分別？

　　(1)Terrible即 arousing fear，指「可怕」，例如：

　　The sight is terrible.

　　這景象很可怕。

　　註：但不可說 The sight makes me terrible.

　　(2)又指「糟糕」，例如：

　　How can you go out in such terrible weather?

　　天氣如此惡劣，你怎能到外面去？（ A Dictionary of English Synonyms）

　　(3)還指「非常」，例如：

　　I am in a terrible hurry.

　　我極之匆忙。

　　(4)terrifying即 causing extreme terror，指「恐怖」，例如：

　　It was really a terrifying experience.

　　這真是個恐怖的經驗。

　　(5)不同英文字譯成中文，有時中文解釋相同，難以得知其間分別。故宜查找英文定義，作出比較。有些書把 terrible和 terrifying都譯作「可怕」，其實也沒什麼大問題。但讀了兩者英文定義，就能體會其間差別。

　　Young姓讀者來電郵說，在 It is estimated that one tenth of the world's population live within "danger range" of volcanoes一句中，由動詞 live得知，十分之一世界人口屬眾數（若是單數，就要用 lives），對不對呢？

　　分數或小數常被當作眾數看待，故上句動詞毋須用 lives。
